Nothing quite warms you up on a cold day like a good hearty soup. This Smoky Ham and Split Pea Soup is a filling enough to be a full meal and tasty enough to tempt you with seconds. Introducing legumes back into your elimination diet doesn’t have to be just beans and rice!
The trickiest part of this recipe is the ham, you need to look for smoked ham that doesn’t also contain soy or corn based flavors and preservatives. A natural grocery store will likely be able to provide you with some options. Just always check ingredients!
To enhance the smokiness of this Smoky Ham and Split Pea Soup I strongly recommend investing in some smoked salt. I use this brand:

Alderwood Smoked Sea Salt 5 oz. Pouch – San Francisco Salt Company
I love the way it punches up the flavor profile of all sorts of recipes. It really brings this soup to the next level. And I understand what it is more than liquid smoke. It also serves as a nightshade free substitute to smoked paprika.
What are Split Peas?
Split peas are green peas, just dried, shelled, and halved.
They are also loaded with protein and fiber. One meal sized serving of this Smoky Ham and Split Pea Sou contains a whopping 16 grams of plant based protein and an additional 16 grams of fiber!
Split peas are also a good source of vitamin A, potassium, and magnesium. If you can tolerate legumes split peas are a great way to add variety to your meal plans.
